After years of Republican-led stagnation, this past Novembers’ elections gave Democrats a one-seat majority in that chamber. Majority Chairmanships have been selected.

Now, according to FOX “News” Channel, “All hope, again, lies with Republicans and especially Dick Cheney.”

With the news of Senate Democrat Tim Johnson (SD) now in critical condition after suffering a brain hemorrhage, Republicans are chomping at the bit for South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds (Republican) to appoint a replacement for Johnson.

It is the hope of the GOP that Rounds will, as is already expected, appoint a Republican to finish out Johnsons current term, which doesn’t end until January 2008.

The image “https://i0.wp.com/www.cycleconnections.com/images/articles/Bad%20Santa-300.JPG” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.Ever the opportunists, FOX has all but laid Johnson on the norgue slab in an effort to raise the hopes of it’s ever-dwindling viewers of an early Christ-Day present. “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. And he is killing a Democrat just for you.”

It is our strongest hope that Mr. Johnson makes a full and speedy recovery. First and foremost because this is a terrible thing to happen to anyone, and by extension, his/her family. Our thoughts are with the Johnson family at this time.

That being said, it will be very interesting to see just how the GOP and Governor Rounds choose to move forward in light of this tragic event. Will they pounce on the chance to overturn the voters’ wishes and plant a Republican in Johnson’s place? Or will the Governor allow Johnson’s wife to fill his seat through the duration of her husbands’ term?

Call me a pessimist…but I don’t see the Republicans rolling over like that. Not after the 2002 incident with Missouri Senator-elect Carnahan’s death and his wife, Jean, serving in his stead.

More to come as this event plays out…
